Maurice Tillet, better known in the world of professional wrestling as “The French Angel,” was one of the most distinctive and unforgettable figures in professional wrestling during the early 20th century. Tillet’s transition into wrestling occurred in the late 1930s, when promoters recognized his unique look could be a powerful draw for audiences.  He adopted the ring name “The French Angel,” inspired by a wrestling trend at the time that featured performers with exaggerated personas.

During the 1940s, Tillet achieved his greatest success. He became a major attraction in wrestling circuits across North America, particularly in the city of Boston and surrounding territory.   He won that circuit’s version of the World Heavyweight Championship, which he held multiple times. During World War II, when many athletes were overseas, Tillet became one of the biggest draws in the sport, helping sustain professional wrestling’s popularity.  He was one of the first “special attraction” wrestlers, whose unique looks enhanced his mystique and made him a box office sensation!
